Mesothelioma Screening Using Plasma Samples May Increase Accuracy of Diagnosis

Biomarkers are one of the most relevant tools for the early diagnosis of mesothelioma. Although the cancer is typically not detected until its later stages, new screening tests look for the presence of these proteins in a patient’s blood or tissue samples to detect mesothelioma. To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of these tests, an Australian study explored the sensitivity of two blood-based biomarkers, mesothelin and osteopontin, in blood serum and plasma samples from 176 patients. The results showed that plasma samples provided a more accurate biomarker reading than blood serum samples collected from the same patient. To measure the sensitivity of the biomarker content in blood serum and plasma levels, researchers from the National Research Centre for Asbestos Related Diseases at the ...

Spice Extract May Induce Death of Mesothelioma Cells

Curcumin, a derivative of the spice turmeric, has come into the medical spotlight as a potential agent in treating mesothelioma. Recent in vitro and in vivo studies have investigated the turmeric-based compound’s ability to induce apoptosis, or programmed cell death. Curcumin has also been studied in conjunction with chemotherapy drugs to measure its affect on the impact of chemotherapeutic treatment.Malignant mesothelioma, which develops in the linings of certain internal organs, frequently alters cell cycles and apoptosis pathways. This makes the cells very difficult to kill via chemotherapy or radiation therapy. As a result, strategies to make the cells more responsive to treatment are a major focus of mesothelioma research. After observing biological and molecular responses by malig...

Pathology of the Pleura: What the Pulmonologists Need to Know

AbstractPrimary and metastatic pleural neoplasms, and non-neoplastic pleural diseases, can have similar clinical, radiographic, and gross features. However, treatments and prognoses of these diverse pleural conditions vary greatly. Accurate diagnosis of pleural disease is therefore extremely important; and histologic interpretation of pleural biopsies is vital to rendering an accurate diagnosis. Smaller biopsies contribute to the difficulties in accurately characterizing pleural lesions; and immunostains are frequently employed in their assessment. Diffuse malignant mesothelioma, the most common primary pulmonary neoplasm, is rare; however, other less common primary pleural neoplasms, including solitary fibrous tumor, the most common benign primary pleural neoplasm, occur. These neoplasm...

Novel Anti-Mesothelioma Strategy

A drug commonly used to treat kidney cancer may increase the effectiveness of chemotherapy for mesothelioma, according to a study published in the May issue of the Journal of Thoracic Oncology. Temsirolimus, a kinase inhibitor, blocks the action of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), a protein that regulates cell growth, which can slow tumor growth. It's used to treat advanced renal cell carcinoma. But researchers in Austria have found that temsirolimus also may slow the growth of malignant pleural mesothelioma cells... Mesothelioma Risk for Power Plant Workers Exposed to Asbestos

Asbestos dust is a toxic material that may lead to hazardous health problems such as mesothelioma. In the majority of cases, industrial workers are unknowingly exposed while at work, often times for an extended period. Thankfully, many industrialized countries have enacted a ban on asbestos, although the United States has chosen to regulate the toxic material despite many efforts to completely ban asbestos.“Retrospective exposure assessment to airborne asbestos among power industry workers,” a recent study, analyzed the extended asbestos exposure of German power plant workers. Asbestos was commonly used in the insulation of power plants to protect sensitive equipment and wires from the intense heat associated with power generation. The study tracked 8,632 former or still active power ...

Mesothelioma Surgery Eligibility Determined by Several Factors

When developing a treatment plan for a mesothelioma patient, a cancer specialist will consider several factors to determine the most effective mode of therapy. Surgery is one of the most commonly performed traditional treatments, and certain mesothelioma tumors are potentially resectable.  When deciding whether or not a mesothelioma is operable, a doctor will often weigh several factors to ensure that the procedure will be safe and beneficial.Mesothelioma SurgeryGenerally, most stage I mesotheliomas and a small number of stage II and III tumors are deemed resectable. Although not all early-stage cancers are removable, when the disease is detected near the beginning of its progression, the chances for a successful surgery are greatly improved. Patients whose cancer is diagnosed and treat...

New Diagnostic Test Facilitates Earlier Detection in Pleural Mesothelioma Patients

On April 4 in Orlando, Fla., a research team led by Dr. Harvey Pass discussed the results of a novel test used to detect pleural mesothelioma in its early stages. These researchers believe the incidence of pleural mesothelioma in the United States is approximately 3,000 new cases per year and is not expected to peak until about 2030.The test, “Multiplex SOMAmer Assay” by Somalogic Inc., uses SOMAmers, which are chemically modified single-stranded DNA molecules that specifically bind to proteins associated with pleural mesothelioma. Malignant mesothelioma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer, is most commonly found in the protective lining of the lungs, called the pleura. The major goal of the new diagnostic test is to detect pleural mesothelioma early enough to effectively treat it. ...

Metastatic Risk After Diagnostic Surgery for Mesothelioma

Although surgery is often used to confirm a mesothelioma diagnosis, certain post-operative developments can complicate the procedure. Metastases to the chest tract is one of the most common and dangerous complications. In a previous study from Kyoto University in Japan, metastatic spread to the site of the surgery was found to be a significant risk for malignant mesothelioma patients who underwent chest instrumentation for diagnosis. The study examined 14 pleural mesothelioma patients who had undergone chest wall intervention as a means of diagnosing their disease. These operations were conducted between 2006 and 2010. Seven of these patients also underwent an extrapleural pneumonectomy to remove the cancerous lung.Of the seven patients, two displayed metastatic spread to the chest wall t...

Mesothelioma Risk from Asbestos on World War II Ships

Asbestos has been used around the world for decades to prevent fire in cities and ships. The advanced weaponry that was created during World War II required nations and militaries around the world to develop new techniques of preventing damage from fire.Asbestos, a toxic mineral known to cause malignant mesothelioma, was the primary substance used because of its innate resistance to heat and fire as well as its cost effectiveness.According to a historical 2008 study “Asbestos and Ship-Building: Fatal Consequences,” asbestos consumption in the United States during 1932 was 197 million pounds each year. In a short five years, consumption rose to 633 million pounds per year and would continue to increase during WWII to 783 million pounds.  During the Cold War rearmament phase, asbestos...

New Mesothelioma Biomarker Emerges as Prime Target for Chemotherapy Drugs

This study considered MCAM’s potential as a biomarker for mesothelioma as well as a primary receptor for chemotherapy drugs.MCAM may be regarded as more promising than mesothelin because while it has been identified in each subtype of mesothelioma, it is not found in healthy mesothelial cells. In a collection of tissues that included specimens of sarcomatoid, epithelioid and mixed type mesotheliomas, MCAM was identified in more than 80 percent of the total samples. In this study, MCAM was expressed in 28 of 31 epithelioid tissue samples, eight of 10 sarcomatoid samples and 14 of 14 mixed type samples.Mesothelin, on the other hand, is notably absent in sarcomatoid mesothelioma cells. One previous study found mesothelin in 44 of 44 epithelioid mesotheliomas but none of eight sarcomatoid ...

The Diagnostic Utility of p16 FISH and GLUT-1 Immunohistochemical Analysis in Mesothelial Proliferations.

This study compared the diagnostic usefulness of p16 FISH and GLUT-1 immunohistochemical analysis in the diagnosis of mesothelial proliferations in 158 cases with a diagnosis of benign (45.4%), atypical (10.4%), or malignant/mesothelioma (44.2%). Of the 70 benign cases, none had a deletion of p16 and 5 cases (7%) were positive for GLUT-1. Of the 68 mesotheliomas, 40 (59%) had a deletion of p16 (sensitivity, 59%; specificity, 100%) and 27 (40%) were positive for GLUT-1 (sensitivity, 40%; specificity, 93%). GLUT-1 showed lower sensitivity in pleural (56% vs 70%) and peritoneal (29% vs 51%) mesotheliomas (P = .004). Our results demonstrate that p16 FISH is a more sensitive and specific test than GLUT-1 immunohistochemical analysis and can be a more reliable ancillary tool to support the diagn...

PET-CT Scan Preferred in the Diagnosis of Mesothelioma

A number of imaging scans and blood tests have been developed to identify mesothelioma. Certain studies, such as a 2011 article published by the Department of Thoracic Surgery at Catholic University in Rome, Italy, indicate that the PET-CT scan may increase the accuracy of mesothelioma staging during diagnosis.PET-CT is currently the preferred diagnostic scan for several reasons. The combination is typically considered to be more useful than a PET scan alone. It can effectively differentiate malignant mesothelioma from pleural diseases. The PET-CT scan can also offer significant insight into a patient’s projected survival and mortality risk. This scan is often used to determine if a patient is a viable candidate for debulking surgery. Surgery can often effectively shrink a patient’s t...

Technique of Pleurectomy and Decortication

Pleurectomy-decortication (P/D) was first popularized in the mid 1950s as a surgical method for treating entrapped lung that developed as a complication of tuberculous empyema. P/D evolved as a treatment for a variety of lung pathologies including other infectious empyemas, effusive metastatic disease, and pleural metastases. As diffuse malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) came to prominence in 1960, when Wagner and coworkers described MPM in asbestos mine workers from South Africa, P/D was one method adapted and utilized for treating MPM. A rare disease with an incidence of just under 1 per 100,000 in the United States, cases of MPM have increased since the 1970s with an estimated 2000 to 3000 new diagnoses in America each year. Today, MPM remains a lethal cancer without consensus regardi...

Technique of Extrapleural Pneumonectomy

Since Butchart and coworkers published the first series on pleuropneumonectomy for the treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) in 1976, the perioperative mortality associated with this operation has decreased from 31% to 3.4%, similar to that of mitral valve replacement, coronary artery bypass graft surgery, and Whipple procedure. There are only 3000 new cases of MPM in the US each year compared with an estimated 222,520 new cases of lung cancer. MPM is a very aggressive local/regional disease for which survival without treatment is 4 to 12 months. Single-modality therapy alone (ie, surgery or chemotherapy or radiotherapy) is largely ineffective. Univariate analysis in a case series from Brigham and Women's Hospital identified 3 prognostic variables associated with improved survi...

Study Shows Improved Peritoneal Mesothelioma Prognosis After Chemotherapy and Surgery

Chemotherapy is one of three commonly used treatments for mesothelioma. Typically used in conjunction with debulking surgery and/or radiation therapy, chemotherapy can increase the likelihood that all cancerous cells have been destroyed. This approach has been found to maximize a patient’s prognosis.Chemotherapeutic agents can be delivered via a pill, injection, catheter or topical application. Malignant mesothelioma patients whose chemotherapy routine includes both cisplatin and pemetrexed typically have a better survival rate than patients taking one single medication.A recent Australian study reviewed a multi-institutional registry and found 405 peritoneal mesothelioma patients who underwent cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic chemotherapy. Mesothelioma Study Reveals Chemical Processes Triggered by Asbestos

As an established carcinogen, asbestos poses a number of serious health risks. While it is a prominent factor in asbestosis, one of the most aggressive illnesses associated with the mineral is pleural mesothelioma, a cancer that develops in the lining of the lungs. An Italian study led by Lorella Pascolo implemented synchrotron soft X-ray imaging and X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) microscopy to examine the chemical makeup of the affected area. The study also revealed potential ways these chemicals could dictate the body’s reaction to foreign asbestos fibers. While researchers have linked asbestos to malignant mesothelioma for quite some time, the exact way the fibers cause the cancer to develop remains unclear. The imaging techniques used in the study boast a higher probing depth than previous...

Selection of Patients With Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma for Extrapleural Pneumonectomy

Introduction: Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is known to have an aggressive natural history with a life expectancy of less than 12 months. In recent decades, a number of studies have shown encouraging results for extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP), especially as part of a multi-modality therapy. However, EPP can be associated with prohibitive morbidity and mortality rates, and appropriate patient selection is vital to ensure optimal surgical outcome. The present systematic review aims to identify the significant prognostic factors for patients who undergo EPP in order to improve the patient selection process. The Evolution of Multimodality Therapy for Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma

Opinion statement  Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare neoplasm of the pleural surfaces that has been associated with asbestos exposure. MPM generally spreads locally along the ipsilateral pleura, especially at presentation, with distant metastatic disease typically seen only in the later stages of the disease course. As such, surgical resection and other local therapies have long been pursued as a primary form of treatment. Surgical options include debulking of the pleura by pleurectomy/decortication (P/D) or a more aggressive extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP) which also involves removal of the lung, diaphragm, and involved pericardium. Even after major resection, MPM almost always recurs locally and has a poor prognosis. As such, many groups have pursued multimod...

Thoracic and abdominal mesothelioma in a dog: a cytologist’s view

Abstract  Mesothelioma is an uncommon tumour in dogs, whose diagnosis can be a challenge to the veterinary cytologist. This paper aims to report a case of mesothelioma in a dog, obtained from the cytological analysis of pleural and abdominal fluid, which allowed an in vivo diagnosis. A 4.10-year-old-boxer dog was presented for clinical care with abdominal distension, difficulty in breathing and loss of appetite. Laboratorial and imaging tests were performed, and the cytology of abdominal and pleural effusions suggested the presence of mesothelioma. The cytology was ratified later by a histopathology of the lungs, ovaries, liver, spleen, peritoneum and omentum. Mesothelioma Risk Among Boiler Workers Exposed to Asbestos

Since 1934, when a U.S. law was enacted to protect all ship components on ocean-going vessels from fire, asbestos has been widely used to insulate boilers in the engine rooms of both commercial and military ships.Asbestos Causes MesotheliomaThe insulation surrounding boilers and pipes on ships were covered in asbestos jackets or asbestos cement in order to protect them from fire. Due to the close quarters on a ship, when repair or maintenance was necessary asbestos-containing materials were often disturbed, putting anyone on the ship at risk of inhaling the toxic fibers. The development of malignant mesothelioma has been almost exclusively linked with asbestos exposure.Because asbestos fibers are lightweight, they can remain suspended in the air for long periods of time. Mesothelioma Treatment with Gene Therapy Remains in the Experimental Phase

Gene therapy was originally developed to treat genetically inherited diseases, but in the last decade, it has been integrated into the fight against cancer. Mesothelioma is notoriously resistant to surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, yet gene therapy strives to make the cancerous cells more receptive to traditional treatment. Gene therapy shows promise in the treating the disease, yet further research is required before it is accepted for clinical use.One form of gene therapy demonstrating potential as a form of mesothelioma treatment uses genetically-altered viruses to deliver cytokines to cancerous cells. Cytokines direct the immune system’s efforts, and when delivered to cancerous cells, these proteins may help the immune system attack a mesothelioma tumor.Another gene therapy proc...

PDT is based on the concept that light-sensitive species or photosensitizers can be preferentially localized in tumor tissues upon systemic administration. When such photosensitizers are irradiated with an appropriate wavelength of light, the excited molecules can transfer their energy to molecular oxygen in the surroundings, which is normally in its triplet ground state. Understanding a Mesothelioma Diagnosis

In order to do so, physicians suggest that you create a list of questions for both your family and doctor before finding out your diagnosis.

Researchers found that if patients make an initial list of questions and receive answers before they know the diagnosis then they are better able to cope with the results.

Types of Mesothelioma Cancer

There are three types of mesothelioma cancer, all of which need proper treatment and can be life altering upon diagnosis.

These three forms of mesothelioma are:

* Peritoneal Mesothelioma - This type affects the lining in the abdominal cavity
* Pericardial Mesothelioma - Affects the area surrounding the heart
* Pleural Mesothelioma -Affects the lining of the lung

It is important to understand what type of mesothelioma you have once a diagnosis is given.

How the Diagnosis is Determined

After receiving your diagnosis, it is essential that you find out how your doctor determined whether or not you have the illness.

Reports claim that the only reliable way to know whether an individual has mesothelioma cancer is through a tissue biopsy.

Fluid biopsy’s are often given but have shown a high percentage of negative results when mesothelioma cancer is present.

Have you or someone you know recently been diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer? If so, please contact mesothelioma treatment centers to become better informed on the illness and the treatments that are available.

Diagnosed with Mesothelioma? What this Means

How do you get mesothelioma? Almost every case of this type of cancer is traced back to exposure to asbestos. Even though this product is no longer used in construction, it can still be found in older structures. Additionally, even if you were exposed to asbestos many years ago you are not out of the dark. There is a chance that you may begin to show signs of mesothelioma sooner or later. Of course, this is not something that you should sit back and worry about. Instead, it is good to keep this in mind and let your doctor check you out at least once per year.

While your first order of business is to treat mesothelioma, you should also realize that you may be able to seek legal recourse. In other words, you may have a case in which you can be awarded quite a bit of money; often times more than a million dollars. This will never be enough to make you feel better about your diagnosis, but you should do what you can to get what you deserve.

It is never easy to deal with any cancer diagnosis, and mesothelioma is no exception. If you or a family member is facing this, take the time to seek the best treatment and then contact a lawyer who specializes in this area.

Mesothelioma Cancer in Children

Until now, only older adults who were exposed to asbestos when it was commonly used before its ban were linked to mesothelioma cancer.

However, researchers have discovered that children are also at risk for developing the illness.

Mesothelioma Doctors Baffled

Since the research regarding children and mesothelioma cancer has been exposed, doctors are asking questions and wondering whether the illness in kids is due to asbestos exposure, is hereditary, or is due to something else.

“The latent period of asbestos exposure in mesothelioma patients can be many years,” explains Cesar A. Moran, the professor of Pathology at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Texas. “Children have not lived long enough to be in that ballpark.”

Study Conducted Analyzing Rare Mesothelioma Cases

In a recent study published by Dr. Moran and his colleagues, eight cases of mesothelioma cancer in young children were analyzed and researched.

The study found that in every case, the children had peritoneal mesothelioma, a cancer that affects the abdominal cavity lining.

Mouse Model Beneficial for Mesothelioma Cancer

They hope the new model will enable them to find out more information about the progression and development of the illness.

Malignant Mesothelioma

Malignant Mesothelioma is a unique form of cancer that originates in lining of the mesothelial pleural cavity and is linked to asbestos exposure.

Although chemotherapy is currently used to treat malignant mesothelioma, researchers have yet to find a cure for this fatal illness.

Studies Conducted

Malignant Mesothelioma has been associated with genetic lesions in humans and typically results in the loss of Neurofibromatosis type 2 or (NF2).

Researchers have reportedly found that the majority of mice with Nf2 mutations have eventually developed malignant mesothelioma.

“Our mouse models should be suitable to further dissect pathways critically important in the mesothelioma development and progression and serve as invaluable tools to test new intervention strategies,” explains Dr. Berns, a researcher from the Netherlands Cancer Institute.
